I know that I can use Escape to deselct, but I miss the ability to click outside the work area to deselect. If your plot goes to the border of the work area you cannot deselect using the mouse.

The elements are not suppose to stay out of the working area. If they do, you can’t even select them with mouse (can find them in the outline view though).
If the selected elements are close to the border, simply click any blank area in the working area can deselect them.
Allowing elements to move out of the working area is a compromise (there is an option in settings for this), but it is not recommended.
I think you misunderstood my suggestion.
Sometimes my prototypes almost covers the entire working area, so finding some blank space to make a deselect can be a challenge. In that case, I would like to be able to click outside of the working area to make a deselect.
Thanks for the clarify Ulrich, I got your point now. I think this is not very difficult to implement, and hopefully we will have it in next update.
BTW, there are other ways to do the job. Besides pressing ESC key, you can also deselect it by clicking the small “x” icon in the “Current Selection” tool category.
Or you can also deselect it in the outline view.
